Where You Been?

Sorry all for this brief reprieve from the internets. I know you've all missed me because what else do you have to do but monitor the blog of a dog from The Establishment Salon.

So, where have I been? I've been at odds with our century. This is what I've learned: A firm rule must be imposed upon our nation before it destroys itself: The United States needs some theology and geometry, some taste and decency. I suspect that we are teetering on the edge of the abyss.

Get a haircut before it goes off the edge. Or not. This is probably the Pabst talking. And it's 10:30am. Yay me.

Stars and Stripes Forever

We finally got our new god damn windows. We made it through contractor bids, facade improvement applications , village contracts and the Shorewood Design Review board; a process that took so long I could have finished getting my masters and still had time to go to one of the 700 meetings necessary to pull permits in this town. Oh Shorewood you silly time waster you!

I digress.

Maybe it's the Olympics or maybe it's the ton of menu of services and business cards I found in our basement earlier today but something inspired me. Inspired me so to grab scotch tape (and scotch) and create what will be noted in my (auto) biography as the first of what will be three elementary-school-art periods in my life. The second will come later this year and yet another will happen 6 years from now when I emerge from the Ganges River, inspired like Siddartha, ready to create once again. Be careful not to get this confused with my upcoming semi-solo-career-George Harrison phase or my actual Siddartha phase where i will reflect on my life and recognize each elementary-school-art-phase as a special journey both individually and combined as a full artistic point of view and statement. You know what, even I don't know what I'm talking about at this point.

Here are pics of our latest window display. Or you could say the window company didn't finish so we can't exactly install our new signs yet. You could also say I had some free time this afternoon. Enjoy our mini photo essay of the god damn windows.

Hello Milwaukee!

In the summer of 1977, I was kickin it in my momma's belly, just as shocked as you were about Elvis. Here's what Milwaukee was up to. Note the US Bank Building as the only building above 3 stories in downtown. Also, peep the rising smoke from the Brady Street Festival shots. Ha. Crazy East Side n Riverwest kids and their rainbow flavored cigarettes!

HEY MILWAUKEE: Wanna Film Your World For A Night? + Looking for Photos and Film Footage from Milwaukee

I am pulling together a short film where I need tons and tons of Milwaukee-based photos and film footage that will be the foundation of the film. NOTE:***Sound doesn't matter - just images, cool angles, shots, movement - your world!! I don't want to give away the flow or premise of the film so if you have footage and want to recycle it and contribute to this project - high five! - and email me for the full story and plan for this short film. I am creating this film initially to submit to the Milwaukee Film Fest and then subsequent festivals....yes, you will get credit! :)

So, two things here:

1) I have a nifty little FLIP camera to lend you to film you (although its probably against my better judgement - ha) and your crazy little night or day out in Milwaukee. Or rock your own business and hand me a tape. Sound doesn't matter - just images, cool angles, shots, movement - your world!!

2) I am looking for cool, Milwaukee based film clips or still images. Black and white or color - doesn't matter. The weirder the footage, the better. Things like:
- basement shows
- nights out
- DJs and bars
- kickin it with friends
- city scapes
- skate films
- scratchy old super 8mm from your momma's attic
- random shots around your school or coffee shop or bar or where ever you kick it.
- your crap on Facebook or Flickr - just send me the link to the photo album!

Please reply here as a comment, call me at 414-530-4207 or email howie@establishmentproductions.com for more info.

I hope to have everything pulled together by Fri May 29th - hope to hear from you soon!

Easy Otis Interview #2: Brian Ritchie, Violent Femmes

Milwaukee native Brian Ritchie is the bassist for the folk/punk/rock band Violent Femmes. Ever since their billion times platinum debut album burst into dorm rooms around the world, Ritchie has been widely regarded as one of the best bass players in alternative music. (Eat it D'Arcy!) Easy Otis reached out into the great beyond to find Mr. Ritchie and this is what came back over the wire:

OTIS: The streets of Milwaukee seem a bit safer theses days.....Where the hell are you?

BRIAN RITCHIE: I have become a permanent resident of Australia. I live in Hobart, Tasmania. Here I am Artistic Director of MONA FOMA (Museum of Old and New Art, Festival of Music and Art) This is an incredibly fun, challenging and creative job, and I get to bring my favorite artists and musicians to Australia. Besides that I am also extremely active as a musician, playing everything ranging from jazz, Japanese classical music, blues and rock of course.

OTIS: early 80s VF: you have long hair that covered your face during Kiss Off freak outs.....there are later photos that show shorter hair....tell us the story of when you cut the locks.....

BR: For a long time I was on a pendulum between long hair and shaving my head. I like the feeling of a freshly shaven skull. However due to requests from the female portion of my family I've had long hair exclusively for about the last ten years. It's also satisfying because most of the other musicians my age are losing their hair and resorting to absurd hats, the comb-over etc. and I can just luxuriate in my profuse locks.

OTIS: VF rumors have been flying around. If you could sum up the future of VF into 3 words, what would it be?

BR: Music is important.

OTIS: Who are a few bass players / bands to watch?

BR: Go to www.mofo.net.au previous festival section and you can see exactly what I am into nowadays musically.

There are a lot of really fine bassists happening nowadays. In Milwaukee I love Dave Gelting (from the Danglers and others). Another bassist I really enjoy is Bryan J. Howard from Athens Georgia.

smashing pumpkins @ atomic records 1991

from CMJ Magazine, Atomic owner Rich Menning Q & A

What are some of the most memorable in-stores you’ve hosted and why?
1) Gene Loves Jezebel - 300 teenyboppers and a label rep jumping up on the front counter screaming, “Move back—you’re crushing the band!”
2) The Paybacks, from Detroit – most loudest and most rockingest (We love Wendy Case.)
3)The Posies – They called us from the road wondering if anyone was gonna show up, we pleasantly surprised them with a packed crowd.
4) The Toadies – Knowing I was a Cheap Trick fan, they worked out “Hello There” just for me.
5) I could go on forever…Low, Lush, Smashing Pumpkins, Wedding Present, Teenage Fanclub, DJ Spooky, Camper Van Beethoven (both 1988 and 2005), Alkaline Trio, Frank Black, Tegan And Sara, Aqualung, L7….
